Hives, medically known as urticarial are sudden outbreak of raised white or yellow itchy bumps (welts) on the skin’s surface surrounded by red inflamed area. They are caused by allergic reaction to certain foods, pollen, food additives, chemicals, infection, medication and insect bites and stings. Due to allergic reaction body releases a protein known as histamine which causes these itchy rashes. Hives can appear anywhere on the body. Though hives can cause lot of itching and discomfort but mostly it doesn’t leave any long term effect on health. Sometimes stress and viral infections may also lead to this kind of allergic reaction. Although there is no specific diet that can cure hives, but there are certain foods that can help the body reduce the frequency and severity of the outbreaks and provide some relief.
1. Mustard Greens:
If you have hives, mustard green is an ideal food for you. Loaded with antioxidant and nutrients, this leafy green are high in beta-carotene and also contain considerable amount of vitamin C and E which help to scavenge free radicals and has potential to fight inflammation and aid break down histamine.
Apples are rich in bioflavonoids quercetin which can help to get relief from hives symptoms by stabilizing release of histamine. Besides having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, the quercetin with its anti-histamine activity inhibits the immune cells from releasing histamine, responsible for allergic reaction like hives and other skin rashes. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found effective in reducing allergic reactions like hives. Anchovies are high in omega-3 fatty acids and known to bring relief from the intensity of the hives symptoms. Flaxseeds are rich in nutrients. They are used to treat many common ailments. Flaxseed oil or ground flaxseed both are equally good source of plant based omega-3 fatty acids. Which can be consumed to get relief from hives.
Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits the activity of inflammation causing enzymes and thus brings relief from the symptoms associated with hives. Garlic contains sulfur that can detoxify heavy metal from the body. Besides this garlic are good dietary source of selenium and vitamin which can be helpful to reduce allergic reaction.
Adding parsley to your diet may help to reduce hives flare ups. It can reduce the outbreak s by inhibiting creation of histamines, a substance that triggers allergic reaction. Add fresh parsley sprigs to soups, meats and other dishes as a garnish.
8. Dandelion Greens:
You may not like the bitter taste of dandelion green, but they are packed with nutrients that can reduce the outbreak of hives. Dandelion green are high in beta-carotene and vitamin c and E. either use them in salad or make tea. But if you still can’t withstand the strong flavor of dandelion green you can consume dandelion capsule after consulting an herbal practitioner.
