Hyperpigmentation can be described as uneven skin color or dark patches on the skin that is caused due to excessive production of pigment or melanin which looks like tan or brown spots on the skin. Though hyperpigmentation is not a serious medical condition, yet it can be a concern as it makes one look older and unsightly. Hyperpigmentation can occur to anyone and on any part of the body. The most commonly affected parts are forehead, neck, chin, cheeks, upper lips, hands and legs. These dark blotchy patches mostly occur due to exposure to sun’s damaging UV rays. There are other factors that can trigger hyperpigmentation like hormonal changes during pregnancy, taking birth control pills, effect of certain medicines, emotional stress, acne and excessive smoking etc.Several treatments like over-the-counter creams, laser treatment and chemical peels are available to correct dark spots. But most of these treatments are expensive and are loaded with chemicals which can have harsh side effects on your skin. However, there are many natural ingredients available in our kitchen, which can help you get rid of these unsightly blotchy patches and even out the skin color and provide flawless skin at a fraction of the cost and that too without leaving any side effects on your skin.
Natural Treatments For Hyperpigmentation
Potatoes contain skin lightening enzymes known as catecholase which can help to even out the skin by lightening the dark patches. Rub thin slice of potato on the hyper-pigmented skin daily. Leave it on the skin for 5-10 minutes and then wash off with clean water. Within a week or two you will notice changes. Continue the treatment until the dark spots are completely removed. You can also squeeze out potato juice by grating them and make a pack by adding fuller’s earth and apply on the affected area to remove pigmentation.
Lemon And Honey
Lemon acts as natural bleach as it contains citric acid. It can effectively clear the dark spots and even out the skin color. However, lemon being acidic in nature can cause irritation to sensitive skin, if applied directly to the skin. So, if you have sensitive skin, before application of lemon juice, dilute it with equal amount of water and apply on the skin with the help of a cotton ball. Another alternative way is to prepare a mask by mixing equal amount of lemon juice and honey. Honey contains great moisturizing properties which will help to keep skin soft and supple. Another alternative that works well for treating hyperpigmentation is to add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a tsp. of lemon juice and apply on the affected areas. Wash off with cold water. The antiseptic and anti-allergic properties of turmeric will heal the skin quickly.
Apply mashed papaya or papaya juice on the pigmented area. The enzymes contained in papaya will not only help to even out skin color from sunburn or tan, but will also help to improve your skin tone.
Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe Vera gel has excellent healing properties for addressing any skin problem. It helps to remove the dead skin cells and regenerate new skin cells. Apply fresh Aloe Vera gel by slitting an Aloe Vera leaf on the affected areas as many times as you can till dark spots are gone.
Mint leaves have great cooling and healing power. Grind few fresh mint leaves and add water to form a paste. Apply this paste to the affected parts to lessen dark pigmentation and rinse of after 15-20 minutes. Repeat the application 2-3 times a week.
Sandalwood has been used for centuries to enhance skin complexion and treat skin related issues. It has great cooling power. It also purifies the blood. All these properties make it ideal for reducing dark patches. Make sandalwood paste by adding rosewater and apply this thick paste on the pigmented skin and leave for 15-20 minutes until it dries completely. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Continue the treatment daily for few weeks to get promising results.
Cucumber is well known for its cooling and hydrating properties which make it an effective remedy for treating hyperpigmentation. Simply applying cucumber juice on the pigmented area will help to lighten the dark spots and blemishes. For more promising effect you can add lemon juice and honey in equal portions and use regularly until you find relief completely.
Almond And Milk
Almonds are rich source of vitamin E and can treat hyperpigmented skin very effectively. Soak few almond overnight and next day grind them into fine paste after adding little milk. Apply the paste all over the areas where you have dark patches and leave on your skin for half an hour or more. Wash off using cold water. Apply this treatment 2-3 times daily for 10-15 days. This treatment will not only even out the skin tone and remove dark patches, but will also nourish your skin.
Tomato Juice, Yogurt And Oatmeal
Tomato and yogurt also acts as natural bleach. Adding oatmeal will help to exfoliate the skin. Mix the juice of a tomato, 1 tsp yogurt and 2 tsp. oatmeal to make a paste. Apply on the darkened area and scrub gently. Rinse it off with normal water. Do this regularly for two weeks to get convincing results.
