How To Use Fenugreek Seeds To Lower High Cholesterol

Fenugreek seeds, a popular spice used in Indian cuisines, are also valued for their medicinal properties. They contain steroidal saponins that inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver and reduce absorption of fats from foods. Moreover, fenugreek seeds are packed with dietary fibers that help in excretion of cholesterol. Hence, regular intake of fenugreek seeds helps in lowering the high cholesterol level naturally.

1. Raw Fenugreek Seeds

Soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of hot water overnight. In the morning, consume the soaked fenugreek seeds along with the water on empty stomach. If you cannot tolerate the pungent taste of fenugreek seeds, in a blinder grind the soaked seeds until smooth. Take the fenugreek seed paste after mixing it with a tablespoon of honey and teaspoon of lemon juice.

2. Ground Fenugreek Seeds

Mix 10 grams of fenugreek seeds powder with a glass of water. If needed, sweeten with a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup and drink it. To lower the cholesterol level in your blood, take fenugreek seed powder thrice a day.

3. Fenugreek Seed Tea

Using mortar and pestle crush a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. Add a cup of boiling water and the crushed fenugreek seeds in a teapot and steep for five minutes. Strain and sweeten the tea with a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup.

4. Sprouted Fenugreek Seeds

Because of the high concentration of soluble fibers, germinated fenugreek seeds are best suited for lowering the high cholesterol level. To grow fenugreek sprouts, put three tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in a bowl. Add 6 to 9 tablespoons of cool water and soak for 6 to 12 hours. Discard the water and rinse the seeds in cool water. Place the seeds in sunlight. Rinse the seeds again after 8 hours. Repeat the process of rinsing the seeds and placing them in the sun until the seeds germinate. To manage your cholesterol level, eat a cup of sprouts daily.

5. Caveat

Although the recommended dosage of fenugreek seeds is considered safe, but sometimes it may cause side effects such as bloating, gas, diarrhea and nasal congestion. If you are on anti-diabetes medication, consult your doctor before taking fenugreek seeds.
