Papaya is highly fibrous and contains an enzyme called papain that has excellent exfoliating properties and is known to inhibit enzymes that trigger melanin production in pigment forming skin cells. Pulp of green or ripe papaya should be applied to dark spots twice daily. The pulp can also be applied as mixture with lime juice.

Great in lightening up brown spots, yoghurt can applied directly to let dry and washed off later or used in combination with a face pack containing ingredients like oatmeal, lemon juice and turmeric. This mixture should be applied daily for a minimum of one month.



Sugar has glycolic acid that acts as a natural scrub for removing dead skin. Use sugar along with lemon juice or massage the darkened areas with sugar cubes for natural removal of blemishes and lightening of dark spots.

Tomato juice or pulp works as a bleaching agent for different kinds of dark spots, pigmented areas and blemishes. Prepare and apply to affected area juice of one ripe tomato combined with one teaspoon lemon, cucumber or mint juice and cleanse the area after 10 minutes.

Lemon juice with high vitamin C content works wonders to bleach dark spots and removes excess oil from the area. Pure lemon juice can be applied and rubbed to the affected area once daily for three weeks. Alternately lemon juice can be mixed with rosewater, cucumber juice and oatmeal to prepare a scrub that should be applied to and allowed to dry on the spot-covered areas. Once the scrub dries up wet the area and massage gently for 5-10 minutes.

Buttermilk when applied directly or in equal proportions with lemon juice or tomato juice helps to remove the dead skin and excessive oil from blemish-affected areas. The alpha-hydroxy acid in Buttermilk is particularly effective in pulling dirt from clogged skin pores and combating pigmentation. To apply, combine 2 tablespoons of buttermilk with fresh juice of half lemon or one tomato and wash off the applied mixture after it dries.



The juice of a red onion, with high acidic content is excellent to cleanse out and bleach up dark spots. Though pure onion juice can be applied, it can also be mixed with honey and applied uniformly over the spots. Onion juice mixed with a teaspoon each of vinegar and garlic juice effectively treats skin of any fungal or bacterial infection, removes oil and lightens the area.

Vitamin E Oil is loaded with antioxidant and effectively clears acne darkened skin areas. When mixed with castor oil and applied daily, Vitamin E oil expedites healing of wounds and lightening the affected spots.

Cheap and readily available, potato is an excellent home remedy for dark spots. Use raw potato slices to massage areas affected by blemishes or other dark spots or combine juice of raw potato with honey for a super effective skin pack that targets whiteheads and helps clear the skin.

Sandalwood has anti-ageing and antiseptic properties and so is useful in dark spots reduction. Use Sandalwood powder with lemon juice and glycerin or mix one tablespoon of the powder in two spoonfuls of milk and add few drops of vinegar. The mixture should be applied daily and can be left overnight.

The smooth hydrating Aloe Vera gel is excellent for treating and clearing up dark spots. Cut a square piece of the Aloe stem and remove the out skin to expose the soft inner portion. Rub this piece directly to the spot for a few minutes and allow the juice to spread to the area and be absorbed for an hour before washing it off.
